Program info
Aspen Polymers Plus is an extension to the Aspen Plus process simulator that provides rigorous modeling and simulation for polymerization processes. It offers specialized reactor models and kinetic frameworks for common mechanisms—such as free-radical, step-growth/condensation, and coordination/catalytic systems—and solves population balances to predict molecular-weight moments and, when configured, full molecular-weight distributions. Engineers can model batch, CSTR, and plug-flow reactors or networks, simulate grade transitions, and evaluate how feeds, temperature profiles, and catalyst systems affect product-quality metrics like Mn, Mw, MWD, melt index, and glass transition temperature. Integrated with the broader flowsheet, it supports analysis of heat removal, recycle loops, and downstream operations using property methods tailored for high–molecular-weight systems. Built-in tools enable sensitivity studies, parameter estimation, and optimization to support design, troubleshooting, and scale-up in polymer production.
Key capabilities:
- Kinetic models and reactor templates for free-radical, step-growth, and coordination (e.g., Ziegler–Natta, metallocene) polymerizations
- Population-balance modeling to track molecular-weight moments, composition drift, branching, and, where applicable, MWD predictions
- Support for batch, CSTR, PFR, cascades, and grade-transition analysis
- Polymer-focused thermodynamics and transport correlations for melts and solutions; calculation of viscosity, density, Tg, and melt index
- Integration with full process flowsheets for utilities, separations, and recycle loops, plus tools for sensitivity, optimization, and data-fitting of kinetic parameters
